Common Imbalances

It is not enough to just discover the root of health problem, nor is it enough to clean out our bodies from toxins or disease.  If that were the case, that would be like discovering your car was out of gas, then washing it, and expecting it to run. Like our bodies, Naturopathic Medicine seeks to nourish and replenish key substances that allow the body to function optimally.

There are many avenues and pathways to restoring health, and it depends on the condition of the individual when they come in.  Some common imbalances are easily put back in balance through Naturopathic Medicine such as the following:

Nutrition

Nutritional science studies how the body breaks food down (catabolism) and repairs and creates cells and tissue (anabolism), thus the combination of which, is called our metabolism. Nutritional science also examines how the body responds to food, as well as how diseases and conditions can be prevented or lessened with a healthy diet. As a Naturopathic Physician, Dr. Cutler will devise an individualized nutrition plan based on your health intake and Lab results.

His plan will help you replenish the key nutrients, vitamins, minerals that you may be low in, as well as address your diet so you can get the most nutrition out of it. One common nutrient talked about today is Vitamin D. This vitamin is responsible for over 2,000 biochemical processes in the body, and diet alone is not giving people the amounts they need for optimal health. Supplementation, in addition to dietary changes, will be addressed.

Digestive Function

The Chinese have long believed that “health begins at the mouth”. The GI tract is a major factor in both recovery from health problems and maintaining wellness. This is where nutrients are absorbed and toxins are neutralized and eliminated. You can get nutrients from your diet and supplementation, but if you are not absorbing these ingredients, you will never replenish the essential nutrients you need for optimal health.

You also need the proper balance of bacteria in the gut so the digestive tract can function normally. Mold and parasites, for example, can cause an imbalance of the intestinal flora, and adversely compromise the gut.

An example of an imbalance in the gut is bloating. This is usually caused by undigested food putrefying in the large intestine (the colon). This can be easily treated with digestive enzymes supplemented in the diet. This helps break down undigested food before it gets to the colon.  The digestive track is complicated, and no one element will solve it in its entirety, so upon testing with Dr. Cutler, an individualized treatment plan will be given to you, to support your individual needs.

Brain Chemistry

In the field of Neuroscience, it is believed you can balance your brain function by balancing the brain waves.  All our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are affected by our brainwaves, which are tiny pulses of electrical activity produced as the neurons communicate with each other. The function of the brain waves can be negatively influenced by extreme stress, malnutrition, disease. When patterns within the brain are not working, the result can be Anxiety, Depression, Bi-Polar Disorder, and more.

Furthermore, Neurotherapy can help adults with recovering from injury or coping with a variety of problems such as Fears/Phobias, Mood Swings, Substance Abuse, Chronic Pain, Fatigue, Sleep Problems, Headaches, Autoimmune Problems and PTSD. In children, it may help Hyperactivity, Attention Deficit, Temper Tantrums, and Conduct Problems. How good someone feels mentally also depends on their level of neurotransmitters in being within normal ranges.

Neurotransmitters are the brain chemicals that facilitate the transmission of signals from one neuron to the next across a synapse. Neurotransmitters work with receptors in the brain to influence and regulate a wide range of processes such as mental performance, emotions, pain response and energy levels. Functioning as the brain’s chemical messengers, they facilitate communication among the body’s glands, organs, and muscles. Numerous clinical studies have shown that inadequate neurotransmitter function has a profound impact on our overall health and state of well-being. In fact, imbalances in certain neurotransmitters are associated with most of the prevalent symptoms and conditions are seen in practitioners offices today.

In fact, imbalances in certain neurotransmitters are associated with most of the prevalent symptoms and conditions are seen in practitioners offices today.

  • Mood disorders; anxiety, depression
  • Adrenal dysfunction; insomnia, fatigue
  • Loss of mental focus; ADD, ADHD, cognitive fog
  • Addiction and dependency
  • Hormonal imbalances; E2 dominance, E2 deficiency, low androgens
  • Loss of appetite control; insulin resistance

Adding to the problem, certain substances (i.e. caffeine, alcohol, nicotine) and many medications can contribute to neurotransmitter depletion and resulting symptoms by suppressing or artificially stimulating neurotransmitter receptor function. After appropriate lab testing, Dr. Cutler will assess your neurotransmitter levels, then put you on the appropriate supplemental dosages to get you feeling good again.

Hormonal Balance

Hormones are chemical communicators (i.e. estrogen, progesterone) secreted by the endocrine glands (i.e. ovaries) that carry messages via the blood to and from body organs and glands. An imbalance in hormones can wreak havoc on an individual’s health mentally and emotionally. Coming into balance is critical for a high quality of life.

Hormonal imbalance can manifest as common symptoms such as: PMS, menstrual or menopause disorders, Acne, mood swings, low libido, headaches, insomnia or trouble sleeping, depression, weight gain, fluid retention, endometriosis, PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), chronic infections (e.g. candida), lack of energy, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, infertility, breast or uterine cancer and more. Hormonal imbalance can come from a host of factors including stress, poor diet, genetics, puberty, oral synthetic estrogens (that may suppress your own hormone function), environmental toxins, not breaking down food properly in the gut and more.

It is important to do proper testing by your Naturopathic doctor as hormonal imbalance could signify another underlying condition. It may not necessarily be the “root” cause, but rather a symptom of something deeper. Dr. Cutler will do specialty testing in order to discover the root problem. Once you know the cause, you are on your way healing and replenishing your health.

Energy Restoration

Energy, in most aspects, is a continuation of the endocrine system and metabolism, of which we mentioned above hormonal balance, digestive function and nutrition. Many common reasons for fatigue include poor adrenal function, low thyroid, chronic infection, leaky gut syndrome, elevated heavy metals, toxic overload, inadequate nutrition, not breaking down foods, poor absorption of nutrients, emotional stress, depression, structural imbalances, disease, low hormones, overuse of stimulants and poor lifestyle choices.

As we live in a day and age where most people feel “stressed”, we are seeing more health problems related to it. If a person is overusing the sympathetic or fight-or-flight nervous system, this directly inhibits digestion, elimination, and the immune response. There are many methods to help lower stress such as homeopathic medicine, Neurotherapy, and removing obstacles to cure.

Many people believe the answer to low energy is to use stimulants. The most popular ones are caffeine, such as drinking coffee, and sugar. These will not work long term. They provide a short energy boost, but they do this by stimulating or irritating the glands or the nervous system. Over time, the system becomes very depleted and then the stimulant won’t work anymore. One is left much more tired than before one began using the stimulant.

Other poor lifestyle choices include synthetic sweeteners, sodas, processed foods, microwaves, tap water, not enough water, not enough exercise, smoking, drinking alcohol, having excessive sugar, overeating, lack of sleep, suppressed or out of control emotions, other addictions including computers and gaming. Through naturopathic principals, a thorough patient intake (1-1.5 hrs), and proper guidance, you can overcome these limitations and restore energy and health and a better quality of life.

Many people are tired because their thyroid glands are nutritionally depleted, toxic and therefore, under active. Your thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in your neck below your Adam’s apple, and it is your chief gland of energy and metabolism. Right now, we are seeing an epidemic in hypothyroidism, and other thyroid disorders and conventional medicine hasn’t even touched on the issue. What is more important, is that most people don’t know that hypothyroidism isn’t a thyroid problem in the first place, rather an immune system gone awry, but most doctors don’t test for the antibodies that show the presence of autoimmunity.

We see a lot of patients in our clinic who have gone to their holistic MD, and they gave them thyroid meds. This is a good start, but the problem is, it is just a Band-Aid if the underlying cause is still present. Why was the thyroid out in the first place? Most conventional doctors do not know, and this is where Naturopathic Doctors are the number one choice for thyroid care, as we get to the root to find out if something else is causing the thyroid to be out of balance, and restore health to all systems as an interdependent whole.

Adrenal Fatigue is one of the widest spread health issues in America today but also one of the most under-diagnosed. The adrenal glands are small glands that sit on top of the kidneys and produce your stress hormones, most of which is cortisol. During times of stress your cortisol is raised to help you deal with the stress, and during times of rest, your cortisol decreases to let your body rest and restore. The problem comes since we live in a high stressed, overworked, and an over stimulated culture that causes our adrenal glands to constantly produce excess cortisol. Eventually, this leads to a wide variety of symptoms from feeling tired for no reason, trouble thinking and remembering, depression, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, weight gain, lethargy, low libido, sugar cravings, blood sugar imbalances, mood swings, and more.

The good news is that adrenal fatigue can be easily tested and treated with naturopathic medicine. Once testing is complete, patients start a protocol to restore their adrenal gland function. In addition, Dr. Cutler will look at all areas of health to replenish normal function, and help you on your way to becoming the best self you can be! Contact us today.
